DIY Easter Ideas

This year I wasn’t on the mood for Easter celebrations. If it wasn’t for the girls I think I would have ignore it, but Mafalda insisted on making gifts for family and little by little there she ended up convincing me.

After a long period of indecision about what to do they eventually choose a game of checkers. Very fast and simple to make, and almost without my intervention .

To make the board we used canvas and the squares were made with adhesive tape. It can be done in two ways and I think both ways are ok. The first way is to make a grid with the adhesive tape, we made it 5cm squares (the width of the adhesive tape), then we paint and let dry, remove the tape and glue more tape over the painted squares to make the remaining part of the grid and then paint again. This method forces you to do the painting twice which can be good if it’s only one child painting this way doesn’t get bored so quickly .

In the second way you glue 7 lines of adhesive tape and with a ruler and X- Act cut perpendicular columns over the tape with the same width. In this version the mother has more immediate work because you have to remove the tape squares to construct the grid. But it has the great advantage that it’s ready to paint and then dry and take the rest of the tape out and then cut the margin and it’s ready. I used a zig- zag scissors to prevent fray, but you can use white glue, as also gonna use for the game pieces.

We made 4 checkers games and the girls were entirely responsible for the choice of colors. The boards are made with 7 rows and 7 columns .

The pieces can be made in many ways using materials you have home. You can use metal coffee capsules, plastic bottle caps, and so on. We used felt and old buttons and glue the buttons with white glue on the felt. Each player has 12 pieces, so the full game has 24 pieces of two different colors . We use different colors in the pieces but always chose white buttons and dark blue or black buttons , to keep the white and black pieces .

But there was still a gift we did not want it to be the game of checkers. And if you think the drawings of children do not make good gifts you are sadly mistaken. A drawing in a frame looks completely different, and if you change slightly the materials then it becomes even more special. They draw on a piece of canvas I cut with the same size of the frame I wanted and then they draw with Giotto fabric pencils, which are fantastic for these things and that you can use for other crafts with them.

Our gifts were put in baskets made of small wooden boxes (boxes from the strawberries we bought for jam). In addition to these gifts our baskets also had orange cake, coconut cake or lemon and coconut cookies, chocolate bunnies and chocolate eggs and gums we made at home.

And this time it was their turn to make my Easter special. Thank you my precious girls!

DIY baby hat

In the begining of March, in our Carnival holidays, we took the girls out for a few days and, as you can imagine, with the 3 girls and the two of us, it is increasingly difficult to keep organized and not leave anything behind! This time we forgot Sofia hat. And we really need it…

Was there a problem? Not at all! I gorgot her hat at home but a made her a hat! It could have been made of wool but at the time I was working on felt and felt was what I udes for the hat!

It was quick to make and exclusively with the materials I had on hand. No fancy fabrics or pretty wools, no sewing machine and with zero cost and I sure had fun making it!

Horse Birthday Cake

She asked me a cake and I baked a cake. She said it must have horses and horses I made. I’ve never made a horses before, not even had drawn horses. Horses are not part of my world! But it was a good challenge and I’ve overcome it and I’m happy with the result. It was the first cake I beked that left my house (and got to its destination in one piece! Yay!)

The 11th years old girl was also happy.

And equally important was to bake a delicious cake: vanilla cake with chocolate filling, my secret recipe and absolutely divine!

This cake has 6.5 Kg! And it would have been enough for about 60 people. I could have used a false layer (styrofoam) but I think the height of this false layers make ugly cakes. I like tall cakes! But I have to explore this alternative, after all, 6 kg of cake are 6 kg of cake… although it can be frozen and eaten when you feel like having a piece of a delicious cake!

DIY Costumes

And it’s Carnival time again! Not worth discuss how quickly the time passes by… Although, anyway … It’s almost March and I feel I’ve done nothing but getting used to work again!

This is the 5th consecutive year that I sew Carnival costumes for the girls, and fortunately, it’s getting increasingly easy. Lets take a walk in the past lane.

2010 – It was the first major challenge, along with my sister. miking equal costumes for me and Mafalda and a for her and my nephew. Conveniently I have no photos of myself dressed in it, but this is how Mafalda was dress that year.

2011 – It was the year of the great disillusionment. I sew another costume for me and Mafalda, a Indian Costume but the weather was terrible that day, with a thunder storm and lots of heavy rain! We didn’t leave the house and the weather was so ugly that I think neither of us got to wear the costume. So no picture of Mafalda wearing this dress that year. But Teresa wore this dress a few days ago and I got the picture. And the costume includes boots and all!

2012 – It was the first year in which Mafalda asked for a specific costume: Tinkerbell. The dress was very improvised and as a silly look, although I think it is ok. I even made the wings out of of tulle and was the first time I sewed a knit fabric in my sewing machine. No hard time!

2013 – was the year of temporary insanity. Conducted by fever “I will sew for my two daughters” I decided to make carnival costumes for both. Mafalda was living her Rapunzel year (this was the year I baked her a 1 meter hight cake like the Rapunzel tower!) And it was impossible to find a fabric with a similar color to the Tangled Ranpunzel dress. So it went lilac. The big yellow braid was easy to make but return home in pieces because went by the head of all the infants in her school.

For Teresa I wanted to make something more traditional, more inspired in my childhood and traditional tales. In my time we had fairies and princesses, police and Indians and witches costumes! Not so much of this Disney characters thing! And so I made a Red Riding Hood Costume even made an apron! The cape was a great achievement: velvet on the outside and satin inside!

2014 – Foreseeing the difficulty of making dresses for both in such short time I decided that Teresa would wear one of the older dresses and she chose the clown. Mafalda decided she wanted to dress like Teresa so I ended up having to make a clown dress. But a minute made version! I sew the dress just yesterday afternoon for her to wear this morning! No pattern. All from my head, fabric in the sewing machine and all with scraps of fabric from the original 2010 dresses! It worked because it’s a Clown costume!

Common to all years is the stress of ending the dresses on time for them to weare in school and the promise that next year is going to be different. Next year I’ll start making the costumes in January, shortly after the beginning of the year, so I can have time to make everything, in no stress! Maybe next year!

Weel! It’s all worth it!

Meias Marias 2nd Birthday

D24_Self_Portrait_2

I’ve been writting on this blog for the past 2 years and I feel it’s time for you to know me better. Today I want to sahre with you 22 random things about me, that do not define me as a person but are a part of who I am.

1. My zodiac sign is Capricorn and my ascendant is Libra. This makes me a person that…in some days is almost bipolar!

2. I love sweets and I have an obsession with gelly gums.

3. I love to sleep, though my girls rarely leave me!

4. Since I can remember I have always wanted to be a mother… of 5 kids.

5. At the age of 6 I wanted to be an astronaut and soon after a veterinary.

6. I like big dogs, the bigger the better.

7. I really like cats but my mind is eclipsed after a while and I just want to bore them!

8. I love to read and I read very quickly. I like to read so much that in the stress of my days I’m happy just to read a bedtime story to the girls.

9. There are two people in my life to whom I do not need to say anything.

10. I am a very direct and frontal person and I hate small talk because of this some people find me arrogant.

11. It hurts me… that some people are no longer part of my life… but our paths diverge and that’s just the way it is.

12. I believe in Karma , I believe that positive thoughts create positive events, and I believe that everything we do will return to us, good and bad.

13. I like horror movies and whenever I’m in hotels I’m always waiting to see Jack Nicholson running is the hallways just like in The Shining.

14. I’m not a fan of driving because it forces me to have my mind focused on the road and in what is around me… and my mind is always elsewhere. Besides I like to see the views and

cannot that while driving.

15. The worst book I have ever read is “The magic Cowry” and was the only time I felt that my time had been irretrievably lost.

16. I’m more productive in the morning. I’m always sleepy in the afternoon.

17. I believe that vote, more than a right is a duty, and I’ve never failed an election.

18. The hardest thing to get used to in motherhood was having company in the bathroom!

19. My favorite food is lasagna . I’m like Garfield, I could eat lasagna all meals (and lie down to sleep on the couch after that) and I would be a very happy person.

20. Much of the bad decisions I made in life led me to find what is best and most precious things I have now, so I think I do not regret them.

21. I’m the youngest of 3 brothers and this gave me a huge ability to argument! And this has been very useful!

22. The worst thing you can do to me is … lying. I much prefer a hard and ugly truth than a lie. For me lie has short legs because the truth always finds me.

And that’s it! Are you surprised?

6 months of Sofia

And 6 months have passed. You’re much more than I could ever imagined and I thank God every day to have you in my life. You’re special. You have a charm that is only yours and it’s unique and unlike anything I knew before I met you.

I suppose that it’s part of your integration strategy, and somehow, a way for you to fit in our family.

You are always in a great mood, you have your routines, you like falling asleep in your bed, alone, which makes it a lot easier on your sisters routines. You are a good eater without eating too much and you are way too big for your 6 months, so I don’t have to worry when you have less appetite.

You like to sing and when you get a higher scream you scare yourself, which is so funny to see. You had your first bronchiolitis a few weeks ago, shortly after my return to work, and it was only then that you make peace with your pacifier. You never used it before and now you don’t always want.

You like to bath and when I wash your back you sing to me. You also like the hair dryer and the hot air in your head.

Your favorite place to sleep is still the kitchen and nothing makes you fall asleep more quickly and more relaxed than the smells and noises of crockery and machines working. This was so usefull when I was at home with you and still is on our weekends!

You sleep a lot, with six months you still sleep between each meal, something that none of your sisters did. You now begin to skip the nap after your afternoon meal, but not always.

You interact with your sisters but with some fear. They speak loudly and fumbling too quickly!

Your eyes are still a mystery to me. At the end of 6 months have not figured out if your eyes are green or brown! You did get the most unusual eye color and your hair promises to be blond. Just like my father. But your cheeks are clearly mine!

It seems like it was yesterday and 6 months have gone by!

2013 in review

2013 ends today. It wasn’t a particularly easy year but it turned out to have a positive balance. I must keep the truth of things and say that there were many bad things, things that made me question, doubt, despair and look at the stars for hours looking for answers or just a bit of silence to listen and to feel myself. It was a year of difficult decisions, sleepless nights, lots of pros and cons analyses… for everything. 2013 was kind of a long battle that left me exhausted but happy to have succeeded in overcoming it. Winners? I do not know if there are any.

But it was a year with many good things, was a year that began with a big secret and that no major mishaps brought a new life into my life that held me from the first second. And living motherhood for the third time was even more magical and much easier than might be supposed.

It was a year of challenges to overcome me, to learn me, and above all to reconnect with me. 2013 brought me back the ability to talk hard things without shame or fear and re-taught me how important old friends are. And that has made all the difference. It’s easy to forget that I am not an island …

It was also a year of new friendships that I hope to keep for many years .

I hope 2014 is a good year, a productive year and if its not asking too much I wish 2014 to be a prosperous year. And what I wish for myself i wish for you! Happy 2014 !

Minnie Birthday Cake

Friday was Teresa’s birthday. Having to birthdays in the same week in almost insane and I’m still officially with a “hangover” of both stress and all the stuff I had to do and organize. But she had a happy day and was happy and it is always good to have my home full of friends and family.

Last year I made one cake for the two girls but this year each one wanted a different theme. Teresa is on mickey and minnie mouse stage so I made her a red minnie mouse cake. And as my family was all gathered here, Mafalda was entitled to a second birthday cake with the Monster High theme!

Now I’ll be back to my normal routines but we will be partying until almost the end of January! Most of my family birthdays are in September, November and December!

Now I’ll just rest here a little longer and maybe eat one more slice of cake. will you make me company?

Monster High Birthday Cake

There is no party without cake and here is generally the cake that sets the party theme. As expected, Mafalda wanted a Monster High birthday cake. My biggest concern was not to let the cake too “gothic”, after all it’s just her 6th birthday and I black cake is not my style in this context. Nor am I an adept of coffin-shaped cakes or tombstones with the name of the children written… Call me what you want!

I also wanted it to have a doll included, so I could offer the cake as a birthday present. And so this is what Mafaldas 6th anniversary birthday cake looked like:

Do you want a slice of my coconut cake with mango curd?

Waldorf Doll #3

The first Mary doll was born in May. It took me just a few days till I have a wig and a face, legs and arms. But it took a long time till I got her dressed, first because I wanted to make a poncho and then because I wanted to make some pants and finally made the shoes!

Dressed and with the right haircut my first Maria doll is finally ready!

I really like the way she looks. Anyway I’ve always wanted a doll like this. Waiting 33 years to see it coming out of my hands was well worth it. Despite being happy with the result, the doll pattern needs some changes, first in size and second in the shape of the feet. But for that other dolls will be born.

And the next one will be much smaller, not only to match the head, but also to have children friendlu size. You see, this doll is almost the same size of a 3 months baby!

Now she just needs a name. Have any ideas? Share them in the comment box!
